Know where you areRetirement in 40 years: 10–15%. In 30 years: 15–20%. In 20 years: 25–30%. FIRE: 40–60%. Your timeline determines your required rate — not a rule of thumb.

The amount matters less than the trajectory. A 5% rate that increases to 20% over 3 years beats a 15% rate that never changes.
Start, then scaleSavings transferred on payday don't require willpower. Set up an automatic transfer the same day your income lands. Presence creates spending.
Automate on paydayFinding Your Rate · Steps 5 & 6
When income rises, lifestyle inflation is the default. Commit to splitting every raise: 50% to lifestyle, 50% to savings rate. This is how the gap closes.
Split every raiseYour savings rate should exclude emergency fund contributions. Once fully funded (3–6 months of expenses), that money stays — all new savings compounds.
Protect the rateAfter the Work
Your savings rate places you on one of three trajectories:
Your current rate aligns with your retirement or independence goals.
You know the gap. Closing it by 1–2% per quarter is realistic.
That's the starting point. Even 3% automated is infinitely better than 0%.
