The longer until you need the money, the more volatility your portfolio can absorb — because time allows recovery. Money needed in under 3 years should not be in stocks. Money needed in 10+ years can tolerate significant short-term volatility.
Time is the primary leverA stable income, a fully funded emergency fund, and no immediate large expenses increase your capacity to hold investments through declines without being forced to sell. Unstable income or depleted liquidity reduces it.

At your current allocation, could you sleep reasonably well if your portfolio dropped 30% and stayed down for 18 months? If the honest answer is no, your allocation is more aggressive than your willingness supports — regardless of what capacity analysis says.
The sleep testIf you've invested through a previous significant decline: what did you actually do? Stayed fully invested? Reduced allocation? Moved to cash? Your behavior is better evidence of willingness than any questionnaire.

If your capacity supports 80% stocks but your willingness supports 60%, use 60%. The portfolio you can hold through a 30% decline is always more valuable than the theoretically optimal portfolio you'll abandon during stress.
