Compare your monthly spending today vs 3 years ago, adjusted for the same household size. Any increase beyond inflation (≈3–4%/yr) is lifestyle inflation.
Measure the creepSome spending increases are genuine quality-of-life improvements. Most are automatic upgrades that happened without a conscious decision. Separate the two.

When income increases, immediately split the after-tax increase: 50% to improved lifestyle, 50% to savings rate or debt payoff. Do this before the new amount feels normal.
Split every raiseThe week a raise takes effect, increase your automatic savings transfer by half the raise amount. Once lifestyle adjusts to a new normal, redirecting it becomes emotionally difficult.

Identify the lifestyle level that genuinely satisfies you — not the aspirational ceiling. Once defined, resist upgrades beyond it. This is the foundation of financial independence.
